Payment gateway or processing allows you to accept credit card orders without setting up a normal brick and mortar Visa or MasterCard account. There are many companies offering this service now and with so many choices here, this will require research on your behalf to determine costs and requirements. You will need to ask about setup fees, commissions, security, and other concerns. With an account you enable your web site to accept an order using a shopping cart system and the credit card is processed while the customer is online and a receipt or key for the product is shown to the customer. You fill the order and the money is deposited into your merchant account automatically. The alternative to this method is to open a merchant account with your bank and process your orders manually offline.

If you already have a Visa or MasterCard merchant account or id then you would only need a payment gateway to take orders online. If you do not have a merchant account, the vendors below can provide one for you.
